Apples give off ethylene, which speeds up ripening, so keep them cool and away from other fruit and veg. A perforated bag in the fridge keeps them crisp for longer. Take out any bruised or rotting ones. They freeze well sliced or as purée, for baking and cooking later.
How to tell if apples have gone off
These are guide values for food that has been stored properly. Check how it looks, smells and feels: mould, a sour or unusual smell or a slimy surface mean it should go in the bin. Eat raw meat and fish strictly within these times, and never after the use-by date.
