Shelf life of peanut butter at a glance
| Storage | Unopened | Opened |
|---|---|---|
| Cupboard | 6 months | 2 months |
| Fridge | 12 months | 3 months |
Room temperature is fine with the lid on tight. In the fridge it lasts longer but goes firmer. Oil that separates out can be stirred back in. Natural peanut butter with no additives is better kept in the fridge once opened. A rancid or bitter smell means it has gone off.
Does peanut butter go off?
These are guide values for food that has been stored properly. Food past its best before date has not necessarily gone off, and many products are still fine after it. Look at it, smell it and taste a little before deciding. Mould, an unusual smell or a bulging tin mean it should go in the bin. A use-by date is different: do not eat the food after that date.
