A paper or hessian sack in a dark, dry, airy spot works well; keep them away from onions and apples. At 4 to 6 °C, in an unheated shed or garage for instance, they last much longer. New potatoes keep for less time. Cut sprouts and green patches out generously, and throw away any that are mostly green or rotten.
How to tell if potatoes have gone off
These are guide values for food that has been stored properly. Check how it looks, smells and feels: mould, a sour or unusual smell or a slimy surface mean it should go in the bin. Eat raw meat and fish strictly within these times, and never after the use-by date.
