Shelf life of salmon at a glance
| Storage | Keeps |
|---|---|
| Fridge | 2 days |
| Freezer | 2 months |
Fresh salmon has firm, glossy flesh and smells mildly of the sea. If it smells fishy or sour, it has gone off. Keep it in the coldest part of the fridge at 5 °C or below and cook it the day you buy it or the next. Being an oily fish, it keeps for less time in the freezer than white fish. Smoked salmon lasts about a week in the fridge.
How to tell if salmon has gone off
These are guide values for food that has been stored properly. Check how it looks, smells and feels: mould, a sour or unusual smell or a slimy surface mean it should go in the bin. Eat raw meat and fish strictly within these times, and never after the use-by date.
